The Stuart colony counter is easy to use. Simply place the Petri dish on the electronic pressure pad and touch the dish with a felt tip pen to mark each colony. The touch pressure registers a count on the digital display and an audible signal confirms each count. Marking the tray with a felt-tip pen prevents colonies from being overlooked or counted twice, although any suitable tool can be used to apply pressure to the tray. The sensitivity of the electronic pressure pad is adjustable for the user.

Optimal viewing of the colonies is supported by peripheral, glare-free lighting. A black background is also possible for difficult translucent cultures. An integrated magnifying glass makes it easier to count small colonies.
